Ghee for Hair: Traditional Uses and How to Apply It

Ghee has long been used as a home remedy for dry, dull hair, thanks to its rich fatty acids and vitamins that help condition strands and soothe the scalp. It works best as an occasional deep-conditioning treatment, not a daily product.

Why ghee is used on hair

The fatty acids and vitamins A and E in ghee help soften dry hair, tame frizz, and add shine. Warmed and massaged into the scalp, it can also relieve dryness and flaking. It is a simple, chemical-free option from the traditional kitchen.

How to use it

Melt a small amount of ghee until just warm, massage it into your scalp and through the lengths, and leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes. Then wash out with a mild shampoo, which may take two rounds since ghee is rich. Once a week or fortnight is plenty.

A note

A little goes a long way, so use sparingly to avoid greasy residue. Do a small patch test first if you have a sensitive scalp. Pure ghee, with no additives, is best for this.
